14th October 2016 - Weipa to Merluna Station

Just a short trip this morning after leaving Weipa, we traveled to Merluna Station - a working cattle station that provides camping facilites for travelers.

Merluna Cattle Station

Various Breeds of Cattle

Lovely green, grassed area for camping with plenty of room so we could choose where we parked.  They also provide demountable cabins  for guests - a couple of these were being tenanted by road-workers.  The facilities were very basic but once again we enjoyed hot showers.  There was also an above ground pool for guests which I soon utilised as it was very hot and dry on the road.  A cool swim with no crocs was very welcome!

Washing up - a woman's work is never done even on holiday!

Office & Dining Area

Delicious meals are available each evening at the outdoor dining area.  Guests are welcome to join other guests, owners, staff and jackaroos for the evening meal.  A lively time is had by all! We spent a very interesting time discussing cattle with the working owners of this property.  Arriving back late  and very tired, he told about how they had just loaded hundreds of live cattle at Weipa for export to Indonesia.  This was the first shipment for some years due to export regulations from both Australia and Indonesia.  Later when arriving back in areas where there were current newspapers, we saw his photo and cattle export story on the front page of The Land newspaper.
