10th October 2016 - Thursday Island - Torres Strait

Once again up early to drive down to Seisia to catch the ferry across to Thursday Island in the Torres Strait.  It was windy going over with plenty of spray - most passengers made their way inside but I donned my raincoat and stayed put.

Linnie & Tezza enjoying the view from Green Fort Hill

Green Hill Fort was used as a Signals and Wireless Station during WWII - it has a large underground network of rooms from which it was operated and this has been turned into a museum with many interesting photos and documents.

We continued the tour visiting the Japanese cemetery with many interesting graves.  There were many Japanese divers in the area when the pearling industry was in full operation.

We had a wander through the town which took all of 10mins & saw Australia's Top Pub - supposedly the most northerly pub in Australia.

(Obviously mobile phones are not big in this area)

The Main Street

We had lunch at the Grand Hotel - a huge meal of local barramundi - delicious but far too big! Afterwards we wandered down the main street and bumped into a couple that we met when camping at Seisia.

The trip home was very windy and choppy with lots of spray but I still stayed out on deck with
my raincoat on.  We arrived safely back at Seisia after a very enjoyable and informative trip.
We then drove via Bamaga back to Punsand along the once again rough & bumpy road which
by now we had become quite accustomed to!  This time we saw several horses roaming at well through the town and along the road home.
